How Chiropractic Care Fits Into A Healthy Life

Changing nutritional needs are a reality as you get older. Perhaps in your teens or twenties you could get away with eating pizza at 2 a.m., skipping breakfast and never making a concerted effort to get exercise. As we get older our metabolism slows down, we need fewer calories and we have to work harder to maintain our ideal weight.

Eating healthy and for your age doesn't have to be complicated, though. Simple concepts can be applied right in your own kitchen to get you where you want to be.

Some tips to consider:

Eat Colorfully. Lutein, which can be found in leafy green vegetables like spinach and broccoli and in fruits like grapes and in egg yolks, can help slow down macular degeneration often seen in older adults. Some studies have shown that lutein may also slow down cognitive decline. Overall, a colorful diet contributes to variety in your diet and is healthy for kids and adults.peppers.jpg

Don't Skimp on Fiber. Getting enough fiber has many health benefits. Fiber is shown to reduce the risk of cancer and it's good for the heart. And as adults get older, constipation tends to become more of a problem. Getting enough fiber combats constipation, too. You can get fiber from a long list of foods like prunes (even prune juice is given to babies to combat constipation), fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains.

Eat Good Fat. All fats are not created equal. It's an easy deduction to make that a cheeseburger with bacon is not as healthy as baked salmon with rosemary. But why? The fat in a typical cheeseburger is saturated meaning it's not heart healthy. Salmon is high in unsaturated fat, the kind you want and the kind that is good for your heart. Depending on how you cook food items and what the fat content is, some foods that seem healthy may not be. As we get older, our need for fat and calories decreases. We don't need as much of either. But getting the right calories from the right foods is necessary for energy and endurance each day.

Just like a lowfat diet isn't just for those who want to lose weight, chiropractic care isn't just for those who are in pain. A healthy lifestyle consists of mostly preventative care. We eat right so we don't get sick and stay strong just like routine visits with a chiropractor help fend off illness and degeneration. Healthy living really is something you can do everyday.
